From Remote to Reconnected: Unity Place Leads the Charge Against Workplace Isolation in Milton Keynes
Unity Place has today highlighted the growing need for meaningful connection among Britain’s rapidly expanding community of remote and hybrid workers, as figures show that nearly half of UK workers now operate remotely at least some of the time - up to around 40% in 2025.
The shift away from traditional office life is no longer a trend but a defining feature of modern working life, bringing flexibility and autonomy, but also a growing sense of isolation for many professionals.
With Milton Keynes now ranked among the UK’s top 10 cities for remote workers, the shift away from traditional office life is particularly visible locally. But as flexible working has become the norm, so too has a quieter challenge: isolation.
For 27-year-old freelancer Kiana, whose work in creative direction and editing often means long hours behind a laptop, the freedom of remote work comes with a trade-off. “A lot of my work goes into presentations, research and editing,” she explains. “It’s all just in a little corner by yourself, isolated. Especially as editors, we’re sitting behind a desk all day. There aren’t many meetings – you just get the footage and start editing.”
Like many young freelancers, Kiana embraced the autonomy of working from home, particularly during and after the pandemic. But over time, she began to miss what previous generations took for granted: spontaneous conversations, shared coffee breaks and the sense of belonging that comes from being around others.
“The only reason some of my friends started coming into co-working spaces like x+why was because the home office was just too boring,” she says. “You don’t get that contact time. When I worked with remote teams, we’d have a 15-minute call in the morning and that was it.”
At co-working spaces, however, those small moments of connection reappear. Kiana describes the informal ritual of gathering around the coffee machine with fellow creatives – a modern-day equivalent of the office watercooler. “We even still have a group chat called ‘Coffee Lurkers’,” she laughs. “You’d just turn up at the coffee machine, and everyone would start talking.”
For many young professionals, it is friendship and everyday social interaction that feel most at risk in a remote-first world. The decline of traditional office life has meant fewer after-work drinks, fewer chance encounters and fewer opportunities to meet like-minded peers.
Unity Place is responding to this cultural shift by positioning itself not only as a co-working venue but as a social hub where work and community intersect. Alongside flexible workspace and the Urban Food Market designed to encourage people to mix over lunch or coffee, the venue hosts after-work events including Sip ‘n’ Paint evenings, Live Lounge-style music sessions and dedicated singles nights, creating space for people to linger long after they close their laptops.
For Kiana, those environments matter. She recently attended a meeting at Unity Place’s café when another young creative overheard her discussing editing work and struck up a conversation. “He just overheard me on a call and wanted to talk. I love that. He was my age too. I feel like we need so much more of that.”
While remote and hybrid working offers flexibility and independence, the emotional cost of working alone is becoming clearer. In cities like Milton Keynes, where innovation and entrepreneurship are part of the identity, creating places where freelancers and hybrid workers can build friendships as well as businesses may prove essential.
As the workforce continues to evolve, Unity Place is leaning into a simple but powerful idea: work may be flexible, but connection should not be optional.
