Don’t be a Tech Hoarder! Bring Your Old Devices to Unity Place Recycle for Good Day
Most of us have unused phones or laptops sitting in a drawer. They’re easy to forget, but they still contain materials that can be reused.
On 3 and 4 June, we’re hosting a Recycle for Good collection at Unity Place as part of Global Sustainability Day. You can bring in personal devices you no longer need. Our partner, Computacenter Circular Services, will handle the collection and processing.
Before anything is reused or broken down, data will be removed in line with their standard processes. Once you hand over a device, it won’t be possible to recover the data or the item.
There’s no set limit on how many items you can bring. Devices can be old or damaged.

FAQs
Q: What items are not accepted?
A: We can’t accept general electronic devices or kitchen appliances such as microwaves, washing machines, fridges, coffee machines etc. or personal electrical appliances (e.g. hairdryers, straighteners). We also can’t accept vapes or loose batteries. Larger items than those listed above will not fit into our pods.
Q: Is there a limit to how many items I can bring in?
A: No – the more you recycle, the more positive impact it will have.
Q: Are there any restrictions on how old my tech is?
A: None – unwanted tech items of any age are welcome.
Q: If the tech is already damaged or not working, can I hand it in?
A: Yes – the tech doesn’t need to be in working order.
Q: Do I have to pay?
A: No, you can hand in your devices to be processed securely, free of charge.
Q: Can I bring kit in that is owned by family and friends?
A: Yes, but please make it clear to device owners that their data or devices cannot be recovered once handed over.
Q: Is the process secure?
A: Yes! Computacenter’s Circular Services team will process and dispose of redundant technology devices within their facility. They’ll follow secure steps to record details of all devices handed over, destroy any data, and recycle component parts. If you’ve ever hesitated before recycling a device because of security, you can be assured that all data will be properly removed, so you do not need to worry about sensitive data being left on your device as everything will be wiped to IEEE Standard for Sanitizing Storage 2883-2022.
Q: How does this help the environment?
A: Your redundant devices will be recycled to ensure that essential materials are not wasted. This helps reduce landfill space, dispose of potentially dangerous materials safely, and reclaim precious metals that would otherwise be mined.
Q: What are the benefits of me bringing in my old technology?
A: Saving valuable resources from going to landfill by recycling key materials.
